For his humanitarian work, Distinguished Alumnus of Unicauca was selected for the "Afro-Colombian of the year 2020" award.
The Payanese doctor Benjamín Moreno Rodríguez, a graduate of the University of Cauca, is nominated as "Afro-Colombian of the Year in the Health Sector category"
"Afro-Colombians of the Year" is a distinction awarded since 2010 by the newspaper El Espectador and the Color Foundation of Colombia in sectors such as Health, Media and Journalism, Education, Music and Arts, Justice and Law, Private Sector, Public Force, Public Sector, Academy, Science and Technology, Sports, Youth and Social Sector.
In this sense, the national leader in Health of the Colombian Red Cross, Benjamín Moreno Rodríguez, selected among the finalists for the distinction "Afro-Colombian of the year 2020, Health Sector", spoke on the microphones of Unicauca al Día Radio about his goals, projects , personal and work achievements, as well as the work he led for the repatriation of Colombians who returned from Wuhan, China, the origin of COVID 19, he also referred to the management he developed in San Andrés during the tragedy that caused Hurricane Iota.
Precisely, regarding this humanitarian work that he considers his most recent challenge, he expressed that Colombia is a prolific country in phenomena that threaten communities and facing them has taught him to understand the dynamics of disasters from the perspective of public health; "I could say that emergencies have shaped and trained me, but permanent study and reading are my obligation."
Regarding the distinction to which he was the object, indicated the specialist in Epidemiology, who was pleasantly surprised because at 51 years of age most people in the health sector go through the second phase of professional practice, when they usually enjoy a job and academic consolidation.
Regarding the institutions that helped him to forge himself as a distinguished professional, he affirmed that great teachers of his Alma Mater, the University of Cauca, taught him the foundations of medicine and the Ministry of Health and Social Protection trained him for more than 10 years to face challenges and help save lives in emergencies and natural disasters.
Likewise, said surgeon Benjamín Moreno Rodríguez, master in Public Health and Social Development, for whom the task of updating the doctor never ends but will accept with resignation the day of the definitive retirement from the profession that he has performed with perseverance, love and some stubbornness that the Colombian Red Cross has given him the opportunity to have a closer relationship with the neediest people to help alleviate their suffering, so he wanted to complement general medicine with postgraduate degrees in Public Health and Epidemiology.
“With my friends from the neighborhood where I grew up, we wanted to write a book to narrate, among other fond memories, the “mischievousness” that we did in childhood and look back as if it were a rear-view mirror not to regret what happened in my life it was not so funny but to share part of my life and that of other people as a motivation and to send a message that not everything in life is bad, not everything is failure, on the contrary, there are things in life that exist to appreciate, to highlight, among them friendship ”, finally expressed the doctor Benjamín Moreno Rodríguez, who represents a pride for the University of Cauca.
