Unicauca participates in an alliance with MinTIC to train new data scientists
Teachers, postgraduate students and graduates of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications of the University of Cauca are part of the third cohort of data scientists of the Data Science for All DS4A program. The foregoing within the framework of the inter-institutional alliance to prepare professionals in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
On November 20, the graduation of the third cohort of data scientists from the Data Science for All DS4A program of the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications Mintic, developed by Correlation One, of which the University of Cauca is an academic ally.
Gustavo Ramírez González, professor in the Telematics Department and Coordinator of the Master in Telematics Engineering explained that the course covers 11 intensive weeks of classes for a total of 400 hours, designed to prepare professionals in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and our Graduates were selected nationally from more than 8000 applicants.
DS4A is a world-class program, with international experts on the subject, coming from the most important Universities and research centers in the world, such as Harvard University. In this context, the members of the University of Cauca who now become data scientists are:
Flor Milena Vela, professor in the Systems Department.
Christhian Figueroa, professor in the Department of Telematics. Andrés Escallón professor in the Department of Telecommunications.
The students of the PhD program in Telematics Engineering, Carolina Rico Olarte, Lilian Cruz, Juan Sebastián Rojas, Jesús David Cerón, Carlos González Amarillo and Cristian Valencia.
The Master's student in Telematics Engineering, Juan Valencia.
Graduates of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications, Germán Moran, Esteban Arteaga, Santiago Agredo and Edwar Girón also graduated.
This program has previously had other graduates of the University of Cauca, among which stands out from the first court, the graduate of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications and Master in Telematics Engineering, Luis Antonio Rojas, who currently works within the program as TA Teacher Assistant, in advising and mentoring new data scientists.
“On this occasion, the Unicaucans developed data analysis and artificial intelligence projects for various national organizations and entities of a public and private nature that were evaluated by an international panel awarding several categories, among which the Unicaucans stood out in the public's favorite project, finalist projects selected by the evaluators and great finalists who will participate next weekend for the recognition of the best project in presentation to the vice minister of digital transformation on behalf of the Mintic ”, said the professor of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications.
In that sense, he added that the capabilities developed are at the core of the national commitment to digital transformation, being also promoted by local companies such as The BitBang Company SAS, specialists in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, whose team of Scientists has more than seven Unicaucans graduates also trained in DS4A as part of the results of the relationship between University, Company and State of the master's and doctoral programs in Telematics Engineering.
The projects of Professor Flor Vela and PhD student Carolina Rico were selected to participate in the grand finale. “The selection of the projects was based on the impact, the good use of Artificial Intelligence and the excellent communication skills for the presentation of the solution proposed by each project. The projects presented solved information management problems in two public entities: “Colombia Compra Eficiencia” and the Land Restitution Unit ”.
“This alliance in charge of the CECAV Center for Open and Virtual Continuous Education and the Master's program in Telematics Engineering, allows the University of Cauca to be part of the Alliance together with the Mintic for the development of new cohorts and transfer of the training strategy. In addition to the University of Cauca, other renowned academic partners at the national level are: EAFIT University, Rosario University, North University and Cartagena University. The Alma Mater Cauca congratulates the new data scientists and their performance in the program”, she concluded.
