Between May 11 and 25, 2020, the information gathering phase of this second ASCÚN consultation was carried out; this time it was specifically aimed at students.

 

Based on the indications of the Board of Directors of the Colombian Association of Universities  ASCUN, consultations are being carried out with rectors, students and professors in order to identify their perceptions, the effects of the pandemic and the measures taken, as well as a broad panorama of Higher Education.

 

This way, ASCUN publishes the results of the survey called "Students have their say".

 

Between May 11 and 25, 2020, the information gathering phase of this second Ascún consultation was carried out; On this occasion, it specifically addressed students to identify those aspects of their lives that have been impacted by the pandemic, to learn about their perception of their physical and mental health at the moment, their socioeconomic conditions, their technological equipment and their opinions on remote training supported by technologies.

 

We hope that these results become complementary elements of judgment for decision-making in each institution and that they also provide an insight to national and local public policy makers.

 

Some of the conclusions:

 

During the pandemic, a large group of students living in rented sites moved to their family homes; it is also identified that 20% of the students live with 5 or more people. In 75% of cases, household income is less than two minimum wages, and 87% have had a decrease in income during the pandemic.

 

The most used class organization strategy (83%) is the online meeting with teachers teaching in real time, which in turn is perceived by students as the most favorable for learning (76%).

 

34% of the consulted students have not advanced in the practical subjects.

 

Greater satisfaction is identified in the private HEI students (46%) regarding the organization of their classes during the pandemic compared to the public HEI students (24%). This satisfaction is also greater in this group of students when the learning process is evaluated (45% private and 22% public).

 

More than 50% of the students are satisfied with the solidarity of their teachers during the pandemic.

 

45% of students participate more in face-to-face classes than in remote ones and 65% consider that their learning has deteriorated in the current situation.

 

32% of the students would prefer to return to the presentiality in all the subjects and 16% would prefer to continue with all the subjects remotely.

 

The majority of the surveyed students (55%) consider that their HEI has responded well to the challenges of the public health emergency.

 

Only 2% of students do not have a cell phone and 10% do not have a desktop or laptop; 93% have an internet connection.

 

85% of the consulted students consider that they are in good health and 70% consider that their physical health is now the same or better than before the pandemic.

 

More than half of the students report negative impact on their recreational and physical activities, impaired communication with friends, other students and teachers, and decreased motivation for study. Half of the students have increased the time dedicated to the family and 1.2% report someone diagnosed with Covid-19 in their family nucleus.
