After obtaining the award for Best Animation in Spanish during the ANIMAYO International Festival of Animation and Video Games in Spain, declared as a Qualifying Festival by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Hollywood for the Oscars, the short film “El Pájarocubo,” was selected among the three finalists in the category for Best Ibero-American Animation, in the "Quirino Animation Awards", which take place on the Island of Tenerife (Spain) on June 27.

The short film directed by the teacher of the Department of Graphic Design of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Cauca, Jorge Alberto Vega, “is an adaptation of an illustrated children's book, written by the Spanish screenwriter Marcos Mas, whom I met in the year 2012 in Argentina in an audiovisual market. He gave me a copy and at that time I was looking for a project to work in animation; As I liked that story a lot, I proposed to make the adaptation to an animated short film, for my degree work in the Master in Audiovisual Communication at the Catholic University of Argentina,”he said.

The Teacher indicated that when he entered the University of Cauca as a professor at the Faculty of Arts in 2013, he started this project with the Graphic Design students Andrés Riascos, Luisa Villa and Frances Astaíza, who were interested in carrying out a work on animation. From that moment on, the “Pajarocubo” team was strengthened by participating in various events and workshops.

To start this project, its director attended the Stop Motion workshop that took place in Cali, led by James Caliri, co-owner of the Dragon Frame software for stop Motion, within the framework of the La Truca Festival, at the ICESI University, seeking to encourage the practice of animation through an elective class in the Graphic Design program, guided by Professor Angela María Revelo, in which international guests such as Marcos Téllez, Ana Barroso and Pedro Henrique Menna from Brazil participated. These guests came to the city of Popayán to support the art and post-production work on the short film.

With the support of the University of Cauca, through the research group Laboratory of Narrative Image and Transmedia LINT, led by Professor Jorge Vega, the team of “Pájarocubo,” offered other workshops aimed at Graphic Design students, focused on building puppets for stop motion. The course was freely accessible and had a large participation.

In 2016, the Pájarocubo project won the national call for incentives for the production of an animated short film, awarded by the Cinematographic Development Fund. Thanks to this financial support, the team made up of friends, colleagues and students from the University of Cauca, consolidated and managed to complete the production process during the years 2017 to 2018.

All the work was organized by the Industrial Designer Ángela Revelo, who carried out the general production of the short film and the students Andrés Riascos, Frances Astaíza and Luisa Fernanda Villa were in charge of building the art proposal with the elaboration of models, props and characters from the story. In the area of animation, the Graphic Designer, Sergio Astaíza and the student of Social Communication, Elvis Parra, also participated.

"The team grew stronger and we were able to build a studio with enough space to set up the model and puppet construction workshop, the recording set with the lights, get the recording devices and organize the office for the administrative management of production, "Said the director of El Pájarocubo.

The making of this short film also had the support of other production companies, such as Animaedro Estudio from the city of Bogotá and Cinta Adhesiva Comunicaciones from Cali. In addition to this, the sound design was developed in Mexico by Kaparasound, the music was composed by the Music Department professor Héctor Tascón and performed by a group of students and teachers from the same Department. The digital composition and post-production stage was carried out in Brazil by Pedro Enrique Menna and Moacir Barros.

As a result of the experience gained in the animation process, the producer Angela Revelo founded the La Valiente Estudio corporation, as an initiative to consolidate audiovisual production in the region, boost the creative industries sector and contribute to the social stability of arts and culture in the region.
