Due to her extensive academic and research career, the teacher of the Faculty of Health Sciences, María Amparo Acosta Aragón was invited to participate in the “Woman, science and rare diseases” conversation, an event that took place in the city of Cali.

María Amparo Acosta Aragón, a professor assigned to the Department of Pediatrics of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Cauca and Coordinator of the Center for Orphan / Rare Diseases and Congenital Abnormalities of the San José de Popayán University Hospital, was invited in a special way to Participate in the discussion "Women, science and rare diseases", an event that took place on February 27 at the ICESI University in Cali.

The Professor is a Doctor, Specialist in Genetics with a Doctorate in Genetics of Human Populations from the University of Santiago de Compostela. His doctoral thesis "Study of the molecular level variability of autosomal, mitochondrial and Y chromosome DNA, in a population sample of southwestern Colombia" was recognized with the outstanding maximum grade "cum laude" in 2007.

“My research deals with the natural history, including the demographic, population, epidemiological, clinical, biochemical and molecular diagnostic aspects, as well as the integral management and evolution with emphasis on pathologies that are part of the group of orphan-rare diseases and congenital anomalies. We have research related to these pathologies where the importance of diagnosis is demonstrated for timely interventions that improve the quality of life of patients,”said Dr. María Amparo Acosta Aragón.

 This way, it is through the investigative process that the shortcomings in the knowledge of the subject are supplemented which facilitates the diagnosis and allows to strengthen the university training in the Clinical and Basic Departments of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Cauca , in the area of ​​orphan-rare diseases and congenital anomalies. “The establishment of an epidemiological surveillance system for congenital anomalies and orphan-rare diseases will allow the creation of a center of excellence in the San José University Hospital for the management of comprehensive health care routes for orphan-rare diseases and congenital anomalies. Which benefit vulnerable and low-income populations in the department of Cauca,”added the teacher.

Dr. Acosta has focused her work on the diagnosis, treatment and integral management of patients with Mucopolysaccharidosis, for which she is widely recognized by the international scientific community as a role model not only for its impact on the care of this pathology, but for the application of her studies for the benefit of society.
