Because our actions transform lives, Unicauca reaffirms its commitment to sustainable spaces: we are about to intervene some guaduales!
With the aim of preserving biodiversity, preventing risks, and ensuring safe environments for the university community, the Alma Mater of Cauca is moving forward with the technical management and intervention of the bamboo groves (guaduales) located on its campus.
As part of the Sustainable Campus strategic line of the Institutional Environmental Policy, through which rational use of spaces, responsible management of natural resources, and ecosystem conservation are promoted, the University of Cauca is taking action to guarantee safety and preserve its natural heritage. These measures also integrate risk prevention strategies in the face of climate change, which in recent times has caused tree falls in the city, posing threats to people, infrastructure, and the species that depend on these ecosystems.
On this matter, María Alexandra Muñoz Campo, university professional at the Center for Quality Management and Institutional Accreditation, stated: “The Rector and the Administrative Vice Rector have taken on the task of intervening in those areas of the campus that need it, and we are working together to make it possible.”

The first intervention will take place in the bamboo grove located behind the Faculty of Accounting, Economic, and Administrative Sciences. This necessary process has been authorized by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cauca (CRC) through Resolution DTC No. 650 of June 25, 2025. The intervention consists of removing dry and fallen stems to reduce risks while conserving the ecosystem.
“The technical management of these species prevents the accumulation of combustible material and helps to reduce the risk of potential fires. Usable material will be stored, while the remaining will be placed in safe zones or transported to La Rejoya,” explained Professor Román Ospina, from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and a member of Unicauca’s Tree Component System.
It is important to note that the university currently has around eight bamboo groves, located both in its urban campuses and at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. These will be gradually intervened to remove dry material, which not only increases fire risk but could also affect infrastructure.
Through actions like these, the Alma Mater of Cauca reaffirms its commitment to Environmental Management, risk prevention, and the conservation of its natural resources. At the same time, it strengthens an institutional culture focused on caring for the environment and protecting life in all its forms, while contributing to the well-being of both its community and the city. In doing so, it promotes safer, healthier, and more sustainable environments for present and future generations.
