Unicauca received a lot to build a “university town” in northern Cauca.
It is a land of 19 hectares located in Santander de Quilichao. The Rector of the institution announced that the work would begin in the first half of 2014.
"With the donation of the lot in Santander de Quilichao, we start the project of building a university town, a town of knowledge where different public university offers converge, transforming the lives of the people in the municipalities of this region of the department."
The Minister of National Education, Dr Maria Fernanda Campo Saavedra, stated this during the formal delivery of the lot of 19 hectares that the Government of Cauca donated to Unicauca.
The National Government official said that this project would create opportunities for high quality education for all young people to address inequality and social injustice. "Education is an opportunity for progress, and we must support this initiative that will impact the 13 municipalities of northern Cauca".
The Minister also said that her office would offer technical support for the University of Cauca. The objective is that this project involves other public universities and they can share space and resources with high quality programs promoting coverage and relevance in higher education.
The governor of Cauca, Dr. Themistocles Ortega Narvaez expressed the importance of starting the university town that benefits the students of northern Cauca, and there are resources for this purpose.
"We are pleased with this strategic partnership between the Government of Cauca and the University of Cauca. We seek to strength the regionalization of the University of Cauca with the delivery a 19 hectares lot which is accompanied with the sum of 3,500 million dollars in royalties and a 6.500 million contract plan to build the university Campus in Santander de Quilichao” said Governor Ortega Narvaez
The Governor also announced that the government plans to assign significant financial resources to support presence of the alma mater in the southern Cauca, where communities reclaim higher education standards.
Similarly, the rector of the Universidad del Cauca, Dr. Juan Diego Castrillon Orrego, explained that the institution would be in charge of the architectural and designs studies, with a commitment to begin construction in the first half of 2014.
" We have the resources, we are working on the design and studies to guarantee the provision of higher education for students of northern department of Cauca, along with others who are interested in participating in this great project ," said Rector of the University of Cauca .
The mayor of Santander, engineer Luis Eduardo Grijalva, de Quilichao supported this decision. He said that the initiative would benefit not only the town, but also the entire region by offering the region high quality higher education.
The formal delivery of the lot to the University of Cauca was held at the Northern campus of the Alma Mater, and was accompanied by executives of the University of Cauca, teachers, students, union members and business sector, mayors of the municipalities in the north department, rectors of educational institutions and higher education institutions and members of the community and social organizations, among others.
