Chemistry Students Strengthen Gender Equity in Science
For the fourth consecutive year, the Catalysis Research Group, affiliated with the Chemistry program at the University of Cauca, joined the celebration promoted by IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) to recognize the fundamental role of women in science.
February 11 marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and what better way to celebrate it than by highlighting the participation of the Catalysis Research Group—part of the Faculty of Natural, Exact, and Educational Sciences at the University of Cauca—in this initiative. Promoted by IUPAC, this celebration aims to acknowledge the essential contributions of women in science and to establish an active network of individuals committed to overcoming barriers to gender equality in these fields of knowledge.

The event consisted of a breakfast gathering with students and faculty members of the research group, as well as a distinguished alumna. Over the past six years, IUPAC has organized nearly 2,000 international breakfasts in 100 countries. For this year's edition, titled “Accelerating Equity in Science”, only three Colombian universities participated, with the University of Cauca proudly being one of them. This recognition highlights our institution’s commitment to gender equality and its appreciation for the invaluable contributions of women to scientific research.
The members of the Catalysis Research Group, from left to right in the photograph, are: Daniela Sánchez, Paula Escobar, Karen Rosero, Alfonso Ramírez, Deicy Sierra, Karol Melissa, Ingrid Carolina, Tatiana Guerrero, Cristian Miranda, Johnny Gutiérrez, and Yudi Carolina Imbachi.
Today, we celebrate women scientists and students, recognizing them as a source of Unicaucano pride. These dedicated individuals spend long hours in the field, laboratories, and study halls to expand our knowledge and develop solutions that enhance our quality of life. At the same time, we uplift the young girls who dream of making their mark in these disciplines, reminding them that with their presence in science, the world will always be a better place.
