Sublime Freedom: More than a concert, a collective call for Peace.

La Universidad -

Next Friday, September 27th, at 7:00 p.m., the Guillermo Valencia Municipal Theatre in Popayán will host a night of hope and reconciliation with Sublime Freedom, a concert for Life and Peace in Cauca. The event will feature César López, creator of the Escopetarra, along with the Symphonic Band and the Choirs of the University of Cauca, as well as Musicians for Peace from Cauca.

The University of Cauca is, above all, a University for Peace. Aware of its responsibility being located in a region like Cauca, it has dedicated its knowledge and abilities to the construction of this fundamental human right. Its contribution goes beyond keeping young people away from war through higher education; it also embraces art as a key tool to transform lives and make dreams come true.

For this reason, the Caucana Alma Mater, led by its Peace Commission, has joined this call that resonates throughout the Department through the concert Sublime Freedom, aiming to revive the longing for Peace present in the hearts of every Caucan. This event is supported by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Knowledge, the Ministry of the Interior, the UN Verification Mission in Colombia, the PLAN Foundation, the Government of Cauca, and the Mayor's Office of Popayán.

Thus, on the night of Friday, September 27th, the University of Cauca will close the Peace Research Week, organized by the Vice-Rectorate for Research, with a grand finale, inviting everyone to a sublime show. This will be led by César López, creator of the Escopetarra, a powerful symbol of transformation and reconciliation, alongside Maestro Carlos René Ordóñez, who will direct the Symphonic Band, the Choirs of the University of Cauca, and Musicians for Peace from Cauca, promising an unforgettable evening at the Guillermo Valencia Municipal Theatre.

“The idea is that through art we can resist the anguish and pain caused by the violence occurring in Cauca, and it’s a call for all institutions in the department to speak out about this situation,” stated Deibar Rene Hurtado Herrera, rector of the University of Cauca.

“This initiative aims to embrace the entire department of Cauca, to listen to the voices of resistance and the artists who resist through their music. We hope many people will join us because this is not just about coming to see us perform; it’s a way of telling the country and telling Cauca: we are all united in what is happening to us,” expressed the composer of hope, César López, who will also participate in the “Culture of Peace” conversation at 11:00 a.m. that same day at the alternate campus of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, as part of Peace Research Week.

Likewise, regarding the name chosen for this event, Diana Patricia Pito, coordinator of the Peace Commission at the University of Cauca, stated, “Sublime Freedom represents that utopia of achieving the Peace that has been denied to us, a Peace that guarantees the freedom that all human beings should have in the world. Sublime Freedom is a dream of dignity, life, transformation—a dream that generates hope.” She also emphasized that this event is just the beginning of a series of joint actions that will continue to be developed across various areas, aiming to contribute to this urgent call for Peace, which invites everyone.
