Interesting Participation from the University of Cauca in One of the Most Important Events in Telecommunications and Information Technology

Professors and Students from the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications of our Alma Mater Actively Participated in the 17th Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing IEEE – COLCOM 2024, which Took Place at the Universidad del Norte Last August.

A Delegation of Students from the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications, Along with Professors Víctor Manuel Quintero and Oscar Caicedo, Had the Opportunity to Participate in IEEE – COLCOM 2024, the Most Notable Event in the Field of Communications and Computing. This gathering primarily aims to share advancements and developments in the state of the art across various areas from academic, scientific, and industrial perspectives. This edition focused on the topic of Beyond 6G and its enabling technologies in modern society, which undoubtedly sparked deep reflections on practices within this professional segment.

During this knowledge exchange event, the University of Cauca presented a paper titled “Propagation Models for VHF Conventional Land Mobile Radio Systems in Cauca and Valle del Cauca, Colombia,” sharing a mathematical model based on measurements from mobile radiocommunications systems. This model is designed to estimate signal attenuation in both urban and rural settings, with Popayán and various areas of southwestern Colombia as case studies. This work, a result of research funded by the National Spectrum Agency (ANE), was conducted in 2023 through teamwork led by Professors Víctor Manuel Quintero, Claudia Milena Hernández Bonilla, and Diego Fernando Galvis Calambás from the University of Cauca, along with support from Alfonso Bahillo Martínez and Carmen Marín Gallo from the University of Valladolid.

Additionally, the article titled “Body Shadowing in an Indoor Positioning System Based on UWB” was presented, which contains experimental results on how the presence of the human body affects the accuracy of an indoor positioning system using UWB technology. The authors of this work are the talented students from the University of Cauca, Nathalia Isabel Guerrero López, Yohan Santiago Yangana Montoya, and Professor Víctor Manuel Quintero.

As if That Were Not Enough, Fabián Alexander Pérez Jiménez and Mauricio Peña Bambague Presented the Study Titled “Performance Analysis of a Location System Based on the Direction of Arrival of the Radio Signal,” which Addresses a Localization System Using Bluetooth Technology. By estimating the direction of arrival of the radio signal, this system facilitates the precise location of mobile devices in indoor environments. This case study concluded with a highlight, thanks to the presentation of an article directed by Professor Oscar Caicedo, driven by future engineers Angela Isabel Becerra Muñoz, Juan Felipe Chaves Tibaduiza, and Ángel Robledo Girón.

“It was very important to present the results of undergraduate thesis work at one of the most significant electronic communications conferences in Colombia, as it allows us to see the work of other institutions at the national and Latin American levels and realize that the University of Cauca is doing an excellent job, recognized by members of the national scientific community, since the students received verbal congratulations for their work,” expressed Professor Víctor Quintero, an Electronic Engineer from the University of Cauca, Master in Electronics and Telecommunications from the same institution, and Doctor in Electrical Engineering from the Université de Lyon (France), who currently serves as a professor in the Department of Telecommunications and Coordinator of the Radio and Wireless Group (GRIAL).

Thus, from the University of Cauca, we proudly celebrate that our people uphold the name of our institution. This time, we do so through research, one of our fundamental pillars; a pillar we continue to strengthen with the commitment to contribute to the construction of a more just and equitable society. Our constant effort not only drives the development of knowledge but also seeks to improve the quality of life of individuals, fostering social well-being and sustainable progress.
