Friday of Science? Yes, and that’s how a new day was experienced, promoting the debate on climate change.

La Universidad -

The Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Universidad del Cauca, through its initiative 'Friday of Science,' organized the conference titled 'Society of the Past in the Climate of the Future,' delivered by scientist Juan Fernando Salazar Villegas. Aimed at promoting the debate on climate change and environmental awareness, this event took place on Friday, May 31, in the Francisco Lemos Arboleda Auditorium.

In various parts of the world, natural phenomena are occurring with greater intensity, causing disasters that not only claim the lives of hundreds of living beings but also result in enormous economic losses for the population and the country. Hence, the importance of promoting environmental awareness at all levels and generating critical debate around climate change. What better setting than academia to harness all this potential and offer relevant solutions?

Thus, an enriching session was held where the main guests were eleventh-grade students from the Técnico Industrial Educational Institution of Popayán. This audience further inspired scientist Juan Fernando Salazar Villegas, a renowned science communicator, to present his conference 'Society of the Past in the Climate of the Future,' providing attendees with a detailed and engaging explanation of the causes of climate change, the current consequences society is facing, and those yet to come.

Salazar Villegas highlighted the urgency of adopting concrete measures to mitigate the effects of climate change and the importance of collaboration among scientists, governments, and communities. He also urged the young attendees to actively engage in environmental protection and to consider their future careers, stating, 'We scientists need professionals who have the ability to change people’s mindsets. We need artists, musicians, communicators, engineers, etc., who through multidisciplinary work can prepare people to adapt to change,' he emphasized.

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, where students had the opportunity to engage directly with the scientist, expressing their concerns and reflections on the future of the planet. The session was positively received by both students and teachers, who highlighted the relevance of such activities in fostering environmental awareness and critical thinking.

The ‘Friday of Science’ initiative at the Universidad del Cauca continues to establish itself as a vital space for scientific dissemination and the exchange of ideas, contributing to the comprehensive development of the academic community and society. So, be sure to stay tuned because, starting next academic semester, we would love for you to be a part of these spaces that strengthen debate and knowledge management.
