Universidad del Cauca at the Congress of the Republic: On the Path to Its Bicentennial, the Alma Mater of Cauca Strengthens as a #HeritageForAll

La Universidad -

With an exhibition inspired by the milestones we have experienced as an institution, the installation of a publishing showcase, and the development of two panel discussions with distinguished guests, the Universidad del Cauca will be at the Congress of the Republic from June 4 to 6. It will bring to the capital all the legacy built over nearly 200 years of academic and institutional life—a legacy that has contributed to nation-building and produced numerous leaders.

Founded in 1827 by Generals Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander, the Universidad del Cauca is one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutions in Colombia. With nearly 200 years of history, it has been a cornerstone in the formation of national leaders, including 17 Presidents of the Republic. This institution, whose contribution to the academic, cultural, and social development of the country—particularly the department of Cauca and southwestern Colombia—has been significant, deserves recognition for its legacy and impact on building a fairer and more equitable nation. Hence, the Congress of the Republic opens its doors to provide a space for those interested to learn more about the history of this institution, which, for almost two centuries, has transformed lives and made dreams come true through its offering of public, relevant, and quality education.

‘This activity is a showcase of the academic, research, and social outreach work that the Universidad del Cauca has carried out throughout its history, having formed 17 presidents and leaders in politics, economics, academia, and research. We want to show the country that it has the Universidad del Cauca and that it possesses a heritage that is among the most valuable assets of the southwestern region of Colombia, the department of Cauca, and Popayán. We will be in Bogotá, and we hope that everyone will join us,’ said Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, excited to present a sample of what the Universidad del Cauca is to the halls of a venue also rich in history: the Congress of the Republic of Colombia.

Thus, it is impossible to overlook that the Universidad del Cauca has significant territorial and social influence, thanks to its support for projects with authorities and local entities in various social outreach initiatives that have contributed to the development of this area of the country. Moreover, this institution has distinguished itself for its legitimacy in the region, which facilitates the implementation of processes that communities consider viable and trustworthy. Hence, a timeline, an academic activity, and a showcase of the publishing house’s output have been chosen to encompass the entire historical significance of this institution.

Regarding this, Francisco Javier Valencia Castillo, Head of the Division of Cultural Management, explained that ‘The timeline gathers historiographical information from the university’s beginnings to the present, highlighting key periods and its evolution. It also considers national historical stages and their influence on the university. The timeline includes chapters on outstanding alumnae, former presidents, and ex-rectors, showcasing their contributions and relationships with the university.’ He also added that ‘Historians gathered detailed information and produced extensive, summarized, and organized documentation for presentation. This effort was carried out in collaboration with the Research Group in History, led by Professor Jesús Iván Sánchez and historian Carolina.’ It is important to highlight the hard work behind this exhibition, prepared with great dedication, affection, and commitment, to ensure that many more people in the capital understand the significance of the Universidad del Cauca. Its location in such a wonderful and challenging region as southwestern Colombia also presents a series of unique challenges and opportunities.

With the inauguration of the exhibition, which will be attended by Dr. Gregorio Eljach Pacheco, Secretary General of the Senate, and Dr. Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, Rector of the Universidad del Cauca, as well as Unicauca’s Vice Rectors, this important event will commence on June 4. Following this, an academic activity with two panel discussions will take place, starting with ‘La Vorágine: Edición del Sur,’ featuring honorable Senator Carlos Alberto Benavides Mora and Professor Felipe Restrepo David. This will be followed by ‘Cartas de Bolívar a Mosquera,’ which will include participation by writer Víctor Paz Otero. To conclude the first day, there will be a cultural performance by Ciprés Trío, directed by maestro Andrés Marcillo. It is important to mention that from this day forward, the exhibition and the permanent showcase of the Universidad del Cauca’s publishing house will be installed, thanks to the support of Siglo del Hombre, the national distributor of our institution’s publications.

In summary, this event at the Congress of the Republic will be an invaluable opportunity to learn about the historical legacy of the Universidad del Cauca, as well as the beginning of the celebration for its 200 years of academic and institutional life, which will be marked in 2027. We extend the warmest invitation to alumni residing in Bogotá and to all citizens to participate and discover part of the rich history of one of the country’s most prestigious higher education institutions. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this tribute and celebrate the achievements that have marked the journey of this Alma Mater, which is a Heritage for All!
