The Environmental Engineering Research Group (SIIA) presented the road project led by Nuevo Cauca in southwestern Colombia. The event was attended by students from Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering.

During the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Research Group on Science and Engineering in Environmental Systems (GCISA), the Environmental Engineering Research Group (SIIA) presented the project 'Construction of the Second Lane Popayán - Santander de Quilichao.

The event gave students from the University of Cauca the opportunity to learn about the topic beyond classroom theory. It also allowed them to understand the environmental impact and everything related to this construction project, which many feel has been in progress for a long time.

Nazly E. Sánchez, a professor from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, and Antonella Muñoz, coordinator of the Environmental Engineering Research Group (SIIA), stated that they encouraged students to take advantage of these opportunities to gain a closer understanding of the role of an Environmental Engineer in a road construction project of this magnitude.

We know that to start the project, an environmental impact assessment, management plans to mitigate impacts, or compensation plans are required. Sometimes we cannot convey what their role will be outside the classroom, and we wanted them to experience it firsthand—understanding the work they will be involved in and knowing what their field of action will be once they obtain their professional degree.

The event, which took place on February 23 in the Francisco Lemos Arboleda Auditorium (Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications), featured the participation of students from Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering. It concluded with a technical field visit involving 15 students from both programs and faculty members.

Nuevo Cauca has expressed their desire to continue with this series of talks to keep creating these spaces where academia connects with the project. They also extended an invitation to conduct technical visits to each section of the project," they concluded.
