‘Dialogues with the Horn’: The First Hornists' Meeting Organized and Held at Unicauca
With the support of the Center for Continuing, Open, and Virtual Education (CECAV) and as a result of the significant efforts made by the Faculty of Arts, the Department of Music, and the Wind Area, from February 29 to March 2, the University of Cauca was the epicenter of an important academic, artistic, cultural, and musical space centered around the French Horn.
Throughout the week, attendees of the 'Diálogos con el corno' event immersed themselves in a musical journey filled with learning and entertainment. These sessions, primarily led by our Faculty of Arts, allowed for the sharing of experiences with renowned performers such as Dante Yenque, principal horn player and section leader of the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, and prominent horn teachers from major music schools in the country, including David Concha from the Departamental Institute of Fine Arts and Gregory Muñoz from the University of Valle.
The first, titled ‘Sonoridades musicales de Latinoamérica interpretadas en el Corno’ (Musical Soundscapes of Latin America Interpreted on the Horn), was led by Maestro Dante Yenque, who shared his extensive knowledge and experience as a horn player, composer, arranger, producer, and promoter of Latin American musical culture. In the afternoon, a discussion was held called “Herramientas didácticas y pedagógicas para la formación de niños, niñas y jóvenes en los instrumentos de Viento en el contexto Popayán-Cauca” (Didactic and Pedagogical Tools for the Training of Children and Young People in Wind Instruments in the Popayán-Cauca Context), which saw active participation from wind instrument professors from the Department of Music interacting with Maestro Dante Yenque.

With a stunning closing performance at the Auditorio Maya of the Faculty of Arts on Saturday, March 2, the event came to a triumphant end. This closure allowed the event on the French Horn to conclude on a high note, thanks to the masterful performance of various musical pieces that had been worked on during the preceding days. It is important to highlight that, in addition to the mentioned sessions, individual classes were also conducted, providing students with a unique experience. “The maestro focused on how to warm up to foster processes of solidarity and teamwork, as his strength lies in working with Symphony Orchestras, which is why he is a leader and head of the horn section in different orchestras around the world. He guided the workshop towards awareness and the importance of considering others, because one gives life to another, and everyone gives life to the orchestra or musical ensemble to which they belong,” stated Professor Germán Antonio Tejada, director and coordinator of the event.
Thus, from this University of Excellence and Solidarity, we celebrate the realization of such important spaces for the artistic community of our institution. This artistic community, through their performances, nourishes the soul of those who dream of transforming their lives and making their dreams come true by choosing musical art as their path. Congratulations to those who made it possible!
