Unicauca research project contributes to knowledge of the territory and risk management in municipalities
The Colombian Geological Service SGC, the Ministry of Housing and the University of Cauca delivered the results of agreements 035 and 034 on zoning of threats due to mass movements, scales 1:25,000, 1:5,000 and 1:2,000 in municipalities of the department of Cauca
On June 29, 2022, the Servicio Geológico Colombiano SGC together with the Ministry of Housing and the University of Cauca presented the results of the cooperation agreements for threat zoning due to mass movements at a scale of 1:25,000 in the municipalities of Cajibío , Piendamó, La Sierra and Sotará, Agreement 035; and the zoning of threats due to mass movements at a scale of 1:5,000 in La Sierra, Rosas and Sotará and the zoning of threats due to torrential floods at a scale of 1:2,000, Agreement 034.
Agreement 035 signed between the SGC and the University of Cauca was signed in December 2019, with resources from the General Royalty System, while agreement 034 was signed in November 2020 with resources from the Ministry of Housing.
On behalf of the University of Cauca, the Research Groups of Science and Engineering in Environmental Systems GCISA, the Road Geotechnics and Pavements Research Group GEPAV attached to the Faculty of Civil Engineering, and Comparative Social Studies GESC of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences participated. . Professors Jairo Tocancipá-Falla participated for the social component; Lucio Cruz Velasco, technical coordinator, and Juan Carlos Casas Zapata, project director.
The basic studies developed at the different scales related to the zoning of threats due to mass movements and torrential floods contribute to the knowledge of the territory, risk management in the respective municipalities, and to the Schemes and Basic Plans of Territorial Planning that are currently being managed and developing the indicated municipalities.
The results have been previously shared and an additional meeting with community leaders is expected in the coming weeks. Together with the institutions, the leaders and the communities have the mission of appropriating and implementing the results in the processes associated with Territorial Planning.
During the results delivery event, there were the presence of Gloria Ruíz, Sofía Navarro, Claudia Coca and Leonardo Méndez Barón from the SGC, Milena Ordoñez from the Ministry of Housing, as well as representatives of the Government of Cauca, Corporación Regional Autonoma del Cauca CRC, mayors, leaders and officials of the aforementioned municipalities.
The results were delivered by the officials and teachers of the institutions to the representatives of the municipalities that participated in the agreements, who acknowledged and thanked them for receiving the physical material, highlighting its importance for land use planning processes in their municipalities.
The director of the agreements, professors, and representatives of the institutions emphasized the importance of the study results, their projection for future projects, and the missionary role of the University by providing knowledge that contributes to saving lives in the region.
