We are ready for COP16 because our home is BIODIVERSE!
From October 21 to November 1, 2024, the city of Cali will host the 16th edition of the Biannual Conference on Biodiversity, commonly known as COP. This time, under the theme "Peace with Nature," the conference calls for reflection on the relationship between humanity and the planet. As a thought leader committed to peace and located in one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, we also get ready for COP16!
In the current Institutional Development Plan titled "For an Excellent and Solidarity University," the third strategic axis establishes the commitment to being a solidarity university engaged with its environment. This commitment includes ensuring the rights to life, peace, reconciliation, and inclusion of diversity. In this sense, when reflecting on our surroundings, peace, reconciliation, and differences, we must consider not only human interactions but also our relationship with the context we inhabit and the biodiversity that surrounds us. This context highlights the unique benefits that position us as a natural powerhouse: Colombia, being one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, is home to a variety of life that nourishes and enriches us, and today, more than ever, we are called to protect it.

At the University of Cauca, professors, students, administrative staff, alumni, and administrators—many of whom are deeply connected to their roots, love for their land, and academic passions—are undertaking various initiatives to promote environmental awareness. Many Unicaucanos hail from megadiverse territories like the heart of the Colombian Massif, a vital space for the country. While it’s challenging to list all the initiatives due to their diversity, we are deeply excited to recognize that they share a common goal: promoting a harmonious relationship between humanity and its environment! Among these initiatives, we can highlight the remarkable work of the Natural History Museum, a key research center in generating knowledge about biodiversity. “For us, it is essential to stay informed about the agreements made at COP16, as it will allow us to update our strategies and be part of global solutions, which in turn will strengthen the museum's projection both nationally and internationally,” expressed Professor Jimmy Guerrero, director of this museum, which is a national heritage site with a Unicaucano seal.

This approach aligns with the theme of COP16, "Peace with Nature," making a special and urgent call for the need to work together for environmental protection. Through concrete and educational actions, our Alma Mater aims to inspire new generations to take responsibility for preserving natural resources, ensuring a sustainable future for our region and promoting the common good.
Thus, the University of Cauca, committed to environmental protection and the promotion of "Peace with Nature," invites the entire university community and interested individuals to stay informed and actively participate in the events and activities related to COP16. We also cordially invite you to follow the coverage provided by the university through its radio station Unicauca Estéreo, 104.1 in Popayán and 93.6 in Santander de Quilichao, offering detailed information about ongoing environmental initiatives and allowing more people to closely witness the efforts being made for a sustainable future.
Stay informed and be part of this commitment to our environment! Follow us on social media, as this Unicauca Biodiverse is ready for COP16.
