Unicaucana Professor Honored as a Pioneer in Robotic Surgery in Colombia by the National Cancer Institute

La Universidad -

Dr. María del Mar Meza Cabrera, a professor in the Department of Surgical Sciences at our Alma Mater, proudly received her degree as a Specialist in Thoracic Surgery from the Universidad del Bosque. This recognition, awarded by the National Cancer Institute, highlights her achievement of making history as the first female surgeon in the Specialty of Robotic Surgery in Colombia.

Professor María del Mar Meza Cabrera, a proud graduate of our institution's Medicine Program and General Surgery Specialization, currently serves as a faculty member in the Department of Surgical Sciences. Recently, this professional achieved a new milestone in her career: she obtained her degree in Thoracic Surgery from Universidad El Bosque and was recognized by the National Cancer Institute as the first female surgeon in the Specialty of Robotic Surgery. “From the early semesters, I was drawn to the surgical field because I had the fortune of being with my father (a gynecologist and obstetrician also graduated from our Alma Mater) in multiple surgical procedures. During my clinical-surgical rotations, I confirmed my passion for this area, largely due to the human and academic quality of my professors,” the professor recalled, reflecting on the beginnings of her passion.

We are thrilled that women like Professor María del Mar are leading and forging new paths in innovative fields such as Robotic Surgery, creating an inspiring space for other women in the medical field. “Receiving this recognition was a great honor and a reward for my effort, sacrifice, and dedication. It also serves as an example for future generations,” added Dr. María del Mar.

¡But the good news doesn’t stop there! It is also worth celebrating that members of our Unicaucana community continue to stand out on international stages, as demonstrated by the professor. The reason? María del Mar had the opportunity to participate in the prestigious event "Immersion Course in Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery for Latin America with a Focus on Robotic and Uniportal Surgery," a meeting held in Boston in collaboration with Harvard University. Hence, the professor shares a heartfelt message for students who wish to follow this path: “The journey is not easy; it requires sacrifice, dedication, sleepless nights… but in the end, the results will be the greatest reward, not only personally but for the entire university community, for the family that always provides unconditional and sincere support, and for the good friends in life. Just dream and make a difference, be honest and disciplined.”

It is impossible not to congratulate this professor, a pioneering woman in a fantastic medical field who continues to achieve her goals to strengthen her profile. The significant accomplishments of María del Mar Meza Cabrera are a testament to her commitment to academic excellence and her contribution to the advancement of medicine in our region. From this University, where we believe in the transformative power of education, we are pleased to have the best talent to educate future generations.
