Unicauca teachers, beneficiaries of the BRICC Colombia Scholarships
Professors Jorge Alberto Vega and Ángela Revelo obtained a scholarship among five thousand people who attended the call of the British Council, which allowed them to take an intensive English course between October and November of this year in England.
To boost the creative industries sector, contribute to the social stability of the arts and culture and celebrate 80 years of work in Colombia, the British Council along with the National Government through the Icetex, awarded 55 scholarships of which benefited two teachers from the University of Cauca.
Bearing in mind that the National Government promotes the orange economy, which translates into support for creative industries so that professionals in that sector find contacts abroad, work in exporting services in the creative field in which they move and it includes cinema, television, performing arts, music, dance, theater, entrepreneurship and other related activities, the British Council launched in 2019, the BRICC Colombia Scholarships.
Professionals working in creative industries in the country, among them, the teacher of the Graphic Design department of the Faculty of Arts, applied and was selected to take an intensive English course that took place between October and November of this year. Jorge Alberto Vega and Ángela Revelo, former professor of the chair of that Unicauca program, who are not only husbands, are also partners in the animation venture "La Valiente Estudio", a company in which Professor Revelo is the producer.
“We take advantage of the call opened by the British Council, which is the first institution to address the creative industries in Colombia. This British institution called on people dedicated to producing audiovisual content to contribute to social stability through arts and culture,”said Professor Jorge Alberto Vega, who also indicated that through the expertise of the United Kingdom in this field, it seeks to create opportunities for exchange, to strengthen the skills of creative professionals, in order to consolidate the creative economy in Colombia.
To this call that was held nationwide, 5 thousand people applied, of which Icetex chose 300 resumes. Scholarship applicants had to present a proof, the required documentation and the certification of an institution where they were trained in the knowledge of this language to obtain the required English score; Professor Vega, obtained level B2 and Professor Revelo, B1, which made them deserving of one of the 55 scholarships granted by the British Council.
“The British Council sought not only to involve people from different cities in Colombia, but to have a broad call at the national level, because the interest of the scholarships is that those who work in the creative industries strengthen the development poles of this sector. For Popayán, only Angela and I were selected, which was interesting and a happy coincidence, (because in a demanding and broad process, we were both chosen) that we are husbands and partners too, ”said professor Jorge Alberto Vega.
Professor Vega said that the experience allowed them to travel to the city of Cambridge, England, where they were hosted by the Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), within the framework of the Film and Television Studies program. Over two months they had intensive English classes and specific audiovisual courses. Both teachers and those in charge of the stay at U.K. strived to offer them a complete program with academic activities, trips and specialized events in the audiovisual area.
With this program, it is sought to strengthen at an international level, the networking that people, who contribute with their ideas and knowledge to the expansion and advancement of creative industries, with the support of professionals from other countries, to attend international markets, develop own projects, or join those of other people and find suitable distributors to open markets and only English is required to be spoken very well.
“The organizers of this wonderful course chose the university, lodging, food, transportation, they gave us a weekly stipend to cover all expenses and we just had to comply with the program of activities that were scheduled for us. In addition, all the people in the audiovisual sector of film and television were taken to Cambridge where we were at the Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), "said the teacher, for whom this experience was very enriching, so he wants to make it known to excite other teachers and students to participate in these types of calls, in future invitations.
