Thinking, Educating, and Acting for Peace at the University of Cauca: An Unwavering Commitment to Ending Violence!
On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the University of Cauca reaffirms its commitment to building a society rooted in respect, equity, and peace. This goal, which guides our institutional actions, demands that we work from every corner to eliminate all forms of violence, recognizing that peace cannot be achieved without truth, justice, and reparations.
In Cauca, a region historically affected by multiple conflicts, the commitment to eradicating violence in all its forms carries profound significance. This is especially true for a public institution of higher education that, for 197 years, has shaped professionals dedicated to contributing to the development of the region and the nation.
For this reason, as an institution, we acknowledge that while we are not yet a 100% safe space for everyone, we are working diligently to strengthen our mechanisms to create such an environment. In this context, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we invite all members of our Unicauca community to be active agents of change. Start by questioning your words, gestures, and daily actions, as the path to a violence-free society requires not only major structural transformations but also small, everyday acts that collectively generate significant positive impact.
We are aware that there is still a long road ahead. However, we must highlight the efforts of our students, faculty, administrative staff, alumni, research groups, collectives, and other members of our community who are working to eradicate violence from our society. Their work raises awareness and fosters sensitivity to this issue that concerns us all. Every word matters, and every silence in the face of injustice perpetuates the problem. Thus, it is essential to promote respectful dialogue, reject violent attitudes, and take an active role in fostering the urgent and necessary change we all seek.
From this house of thought and reflection, we apologize to those who have been victims of gender-based violence within our Alma Mater. As an institution committed to building peace, we recognize our responsibility to promote truth, justice, and reparations. Therefore, we reiterate our commitment to strengthening mechanisms for prevention, response, and support, ensuring that anyone who has been a victim of violence or is aware of related cases can formally report them with confidence, receiving effective support and responses. While presenting a formal complaint is challenging, it is a critical step in activating institutional pathways and providing comprehensive support.
Today, we call on everyone to reflect deeply on the fact that eradicating violence must go beyond occasional commemorations. It requires constant commitment from individuals and the community as a whole.
Finally, we invite every member of the Unicauca community to consider their role in transforming society into one free of violence. Building a better Cauca requires collective and sustained effort. We reaffirm our institutional commitment to actively eradicate all forms of violence and to advance toward a university that not only educates professionals who transform lives and realize dreams but also fosters agents of change committed to peace. Let us work together to ensure that this university, which is #Everyone'sHeritage, is also a safe space for all.
In conclusion, at Unicauca, we acknowledge ourselves to transform! We will continue to do everything necessary to lay the foundation for and strengthen a university where we collectively build a life free of violence.
