The graduate of the Physics Engineering program and current student of the Master's in Bioengineering, Kebin Andrés Contreras, was recognized with the Best Paper Award for the excellence and impact of his research.

Kebin Andrés Contreras, a physics engineer and current Master's student in Bioengineering at the University of Cauca, had a remarkable participation in the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) 2024, the largest and most important event in the field of computer vision worldwide. This prestigious biennial congress brought together experts and researchers from around the globe in Milan, Italy, from September 28 to October 4, to share their advancements in Computer Vision and Machine Learning.

In this edition, Kebin Contreras had two papers accepted for presentation at the ECCV workshops. The first, titled 'High Dynamic Range Modulo Imaging for Robust Object Detection in Autonomous Driving,' was awarded the prestigious Best Paper Award, recognizing the excellence and impact of his research in the field.

'This work presents the use of modulo sensors for robust object detection. The modulo sensor allows pixels to “reset/wrap” upon reaching saturation levels by capturing a coding irradiance image that can later be recovered using unwrapping algorithms. The applied reconstruction techniques enable HDR recovery of color intensity and image details, ensuring better visual quality even in extreme lighting conditions at the cost of additional time,' reads the abstract of the research paper.

The evaluation process at ECCV is extremely rigorous, and the project 'High Dynamic Range Modulo Imaging for Robust Object Detection in Autonomous Driving' achieved an average score of 8.5, the highest recorded in its category, demonstrating the quality and relevance of its contributions. This recognition highlights his commitment to cutting-edge research and its impact on the development of technologies.

The European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) is a premier biennial research conference on Computer Vision and Machine Learning, organized by the European Computer Vision Association (ECVA). It takes place in even-numbered years and brings together the scientific and industrial communities in these fields. The first ECCV was held in 1990 in Antibes, France, and it has since been hosted in various locations across Europe. The proceedings of the papers are published by Springer Science+Business Media.
