The GNC Sapiens Ranking 2023 assesses Colombian higher education institutions based on indicators of "New Knowledge" generation, measuring outputs beyond journal articles. The Sapiens Research Group, which produces the ranking, considers variables from the Minciencias Model: research books, book chapters, patented or patent-pending technological products, plant varieties and new animal breeds, as well as works in art, architecture, and design.
Regarding the significance of being ranked among the top 17, it reflects the University of Cauca's success in utilizing a wide range of mechanisms to generate knowledge. This includes not only publications in indexed journals but also significant achievements through editorial policies and efforts in biological and artistic disciplines.
Furthermore, the Scientometrics Committee, composed of Carolina Delgado Hurtado, Margarita Rosa Sánchez, and Juan Pablo Casas, emphasizes the efforts undertaken by researchers and the Division of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Engagement with the Environment (DAE). These efforts are currently supported by modern database technologies to strengthen patenting processes, which are beginning to show positive impacts.
