Nursing Program Celebrates World Respected Childbirth Week

With a virtual discussion called "My decision must be respected", the Nursing program of the University of Cauca joins the world reflection on obstetric violence.

 

The Colombian Network “Parir en Paz” and the research group TJEG: Nursing Research attached to the Faculty of Health Sciences will hold the virtual discussion: "My decision must be respected", the event will take place on Wednesday May 20 from 10 : 00 in the morning and will be broadcast on the Fan Page of the Universidad del Cauca and the YouTube channel.

 

As reported by the teacher Elisa Tobar Jojoa of the Nursing program, the activity seeks to work on the visibility of obstetric violence and the promotion of respected childbirth, through investigative processes, incidence in the construction of public policies, training and social interaction.

 

"Since 2004, World Respected Childbirth Week has been celebrated, an initiative created by the French Association for Respected Childbirth and promoted by UNICEF, whose objective is to raise our voices and raise awareness so that birth is once again considered a natural process, in which the rights of the mother, the baby and the pregnant family are respected”, adds the teacher.

 

Each year is commemorated with a different slogan to organize allusive events and mainly to raise awareness and generate actions that contribute to achieving the goal that each woman in the world has a respected, protected and meaningful delivery, this time the slogan of the year is "My decision must be respected."

 

A respected birth is one that seeks to give each mother and baby a birth process in which the decisions, well-being and health of both are privileged as protagonists, in a natural and respectful environment, with clear, pertinent and timely information that allows you to make an autonomous decision on aspects such as: the different possibilities of care, the position to give birth, the company or not of the person of your choice, the benefits and contraindications of medical procedures, the construction of the birth plan, where and with whom to give birth, among others.

 

"By promoting a respected delivery for mom and baby, we seek to eliminate obstetric violence and reduce the number of unnecessary medical interventions, taking into account the latest scientific evidence and following the recommendations of the World Health Organization for a positive delivery experience ”, Concludes the professor of the Nursing program at the Universidad del Cauca.
