Notable Participation of the University of Cauca at the XV Colombian Congress on Transport and Transit 2024

La Universidad -

Professors and students from the University of Cauca represented the institution at the XV Colombian Congress on Transport and Transit 2024, held in Ibagué from August 14 to 16, 2024. The Unicaucana delegation stood out for presenting 10 innovative papers on crucial topics such as public transport, road safety, and sustainable mobility.

The Unicaucana presentations at this important congress facilitated a valuable exchange of knowledge and experiences, as well as encouraged the continued research in mobility and road safety—critical aspects for addressing challenges in both large and small cities.

“We realized that the research products on mobility and road safety generated in our faculty are at the national forefront, which is very important for the University. Furthermore, along with universities across the country, we are teaching in the same terms to make a significant change in society. We also emphasize the importance of modernizing the fleet of public buses, including both the buses and the infrastructure designed for clean energy,” stated Professor Carlos Oñate from the Department of Roads and Transport.

Thus, the University of Cauca's commitment to research and the development of innovative solutions was evident in each of the presentations, which even earned Unicauca a commendation from the congress organizers. This recognition highlighted that the research had been developed through research seedbeds, instilling a passion for research in our young scholars.

"For the students, this was an enriching experience as it motivated them to investigate more, work as a team, and realize the importance of sharing their work and representing the institution proudly," stated Professor Alexandra Rosas from the Department of Roads and Transport.

It is important to mention that the Colombian Congress on Transport and Transit, formerly known as the Colombian Symposium on Traffic and Transport Engineering, has its roots in our Alma Mater. In the 1980s, it was initiated within the graduate program in Roads and Transport, becoming, over more than 30 years, a meeting space for academics, students, consultants, entrepreneurs, and national and international authorities who gather to discuss recent advances in research and applications in traffic engineering, transportation, and logistics.

During the event, it was announced that the XVI version of the Colombian Congress on Transport and Transit will be held at the University of Cauca in 2027, coinciding with the celebration of the 200th anniversary of our beloved institution. This good news presents a unique opportunity to highlight the academic leadership and the University of Cauca's commitment to the country's development in the field of transportation and mobility.

On this occasion, the professors from the Department of Roads and Transport—Mg. José Aldemar González, Mg. Alexandra Rosas, Mg. Nancy Paola González, Mg. Cristian Rosas, Mg. Víctor Renán Castillo, Mg. Diego Felipe Acevedo, and Mg. Carlos Eduardo Oñate—along with the Civil Engineering students from the Popayán and Santander de Quilichao campuses, were the ones who brought the Unicaucano blue and red to this prominent event. Among the student presenters were Andrés Felipe Gómez, David González, Vanessa Alpala, Andrea Burgos, Giselle Guevara Tascón, Harleson Artunduaga, Karla Fernanda Mora, Laura Camila Meneses, Mariana Ulchur Ruiz, Sharon Jordán Vidal, Ángela María Muñoz, Carlos Felipe Manchola, Jesús David Romero, and Wilson Rodríguez, all active members of the Research Seedbed in Transport (SIT) and the Research Seedbed in Roads and Transit (SIVYTS).

Congratulations to all who represented our University!
