Five Unicauca projects financed by the General Royalties System were presented to the community
In alliance with the Departmental Government, the University of Cauca socialized in the House of the coin, the five Science, Technology and Innovation projects financed with CTel Funds from the General Royalties System that have been running since 2020.
The projects of the University of Cauca socialized are directed to the transfer of research results; to the strengthening of productive chains of crops such as coconut and strawberry; to the improvement of the science, technology and innovation ecosystem and to the creation of the technological development center for the innovation of the road infrastructure of the region.
The presentation day was preceded by the Governor of Cauca, Elías Larrahondo Carabalí and the Secretariat of Economic Development and Competitiveness of Cauca, who opened the space with thanks to the University of Cauca and the different Alma Mater researchers who lead the five projects mentioned, due to the great regional impact that is evidenced through the articulation that each one of these has with the communities. He also thanked the allied entities in the execution of the investigations such as the Colombian Agricultural Research Corporation AGROSAVIA, the National Association of Colombian Entrepreneurs ANDI and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, as they show the importance of working in an articulated manner so that the projects respond to the realities and needs of the department.
For his part, the Rector of the University of Cauca, José Luis Diago Franco stated that “for the University of Cauca it is a source of satisfaction that its best research exponents are collaborating with the social, technological and scientific development of the department of Cauca, since of the 9 projects presented, in 5 our research teams are participating where we also have international support and participation from KTH. This is a way to internationalize royalty resources”.
The execution of these projects has taken place gradually, as explained by Héctor Samuel Villada Castillo, Vice-Rector for Research. The transfer project for the production of bio materials being the first to start activities last November. In December, work began on the project to improve the science, technology and innovation ecosystem. In January the project Strengthening the coconut production chain. In February the Technological Development Center for Road Infrastructure Innovation and in March the project to strengthen the strawberry production chain would enter the list.
“It is a process that has been long and required the effort of all the institutions present here, so they are activities to be highlighted. In general terms, we want to show what the University of Cauca has been doing with the different allies with the resources provided by the General Royalties System ”, he assured.
With the launch of these Research projects, the University of Cauca shows that harmonious work with other institutions gathers fruits that contribute to the social transformation of the territory.

‘Consolidation of transfer processes and technologies for the production of biodegradable materials’
Presented by the researcher Hugo Portela Guarín. It was approved for a value of $ 8 thousand 178 million pesos, being the result of 20 years of work by the CYTBIA group.
"Strengthening the coconut production chain of the Pacific Coast of Cauca, Stage I"
Led by José Fernando Grass, professor at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, and is configured as the first initiative of this type that the University of Cauca will execute in this western region of the Department.
‘Research and development to strengthen the production chain of strawberries in the department of Cauca’
The proposal, in which more than 8 thousand 367 million pesos will be invested, is led by members of the research group Exploitation of By-products and Agroindustrial Waste (ASUBAGROIN), of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, led by Professor José Luis Hoyos Concha.
‘Implementation of a program for the participation and articulation of the regional ecosystem of science, technology and innovation in Cauca’
Led by professors Adolfo Plazas Tenorio and Álvaro Rendón, it executes more than 6 billion pesos, whose objective is to strengthen the regional ecosystem of science, technology and innovation to facilitate the use of knowledge in the social and productive sectors.
‘Creation of a Technological Development Center for the Innovation of Road Infrastructure in the Department of Cauca’
Led by Jaime Rafael Obando Ante and managed by Álvaro Guarín Cobo of the Royal Institute of Technology KTH in Stockholm (Sweden), it executes more than 9 billion pesos.
