Educational strategies in breastfeeding: a project for care and life
The TJENG Nursing Research Research Group of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Unicauca, presents the research results of the project "Educational strategy for the maintenance of breastfeeding", which was developed at the Susana López Hospital in Valencia with resources provided by the Vice-Rector for Research.
The dissemination of the results obtained in this initiative will be done through five videos, which reflect the main findings in the educational experience on breastfeeding guided by nurses to mothers of the Susana López de Valencia Hospital in Popayán. These audiovisual pieces show topics such as preparing to start breastfeeding (washing hands, hygiene of the mother, etc.); positions that the mother can adopt so that she is comfortable and calm; and the puerperium, which are the advantages of breast milk, both for the baby and for the mother in recovering from it during this process.
Researchers committed to breastfeeding
Martha Isabel Vivas Chacón (Project Director; Epidemiology Specialist) and Dayra Maritza Quiñones Zúñiga (Principal Investigator; Neonatal Nursing Specialist and Nursing Master), group researchers and project leaders, were the protagonists of this experience, which was born inspired by in Breastfeeding Week 2020 and in the experiences of the researchers during the COVID-19 pandemic, where mothers were separated from their children and the only contact they had was through video calls. These situations sensitized the professionals to generate a proposal from a more human point of view, addressing breastfeeding beyond the medical protocols for their care, focusing on the needs of mothers and their babies, their context and their particularities, to in order to provide care from sensitivity and recognition of difference.
The research was carried out in association with the Susana López de Valencia Hospital in the city of Popayán, a health provider entity certified as a Women's and Child-Friendly Institution (IIAMI) and included the participation of Co-investigators: Doctor Ana María Velasco Restrepo (Pediatrician and Neonatology Specialist) member of the Research Group: Breastfeeding Research of the Department of Pediatrics of the University of Cauca and Nurse Claudia Jimena Castro Garzón (Master in Epidemiology and Neonatal Nursing Specialist) employee of the Susana López Hospital From Valencia
The guidance process for mothers to promote breastfeeding begins with the prenatal control program.
“It has been very significant because we have learned from the mothers and we have learned about their educational needs. Although the pandemic separated them, they were always interested in maintaining that mother-son bond. It was very important to us how to encourage breastfeeding. Even if the mother cannot breastfeed the child, it is important to continue the process, aimed at learning techniques for breastfeeding”, conclude the Researchers.
