El Carmen: Library of Unicauca received a new collection of books from the Academy of History of Cauca.
On October 25, the official handover of the Edgar Penagos Casas Collection from the Academy of History of Cauca took place at El Carmen Library. This collection stands as a tribute to the legacy of the two-time rector of the University of Cauca
The Academy of History of Cauca presented, on October 25, to El Carmen Library located in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, a registry containing bibliographic material related to the history of Colombia, Cauca, Popayán, and some European countries, particularly focusing on the 18th and 19th centuries.
The official ceremony was attended by Aida Patricia González, Academic Vice-Rector of the University; Alfonso Rafael Buelvas, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; Myriam Torres, head of the Division of Media Management and Bibliographic Resources; Zamira Díaz López, lecturer in the Department of History and president of the Academy of History of Cauca; Luis Eduardo Penagos Tafurt, son of Edgar Penagos Casas, along with other lecturers, students, and administrative staff.
The handover of the Edgar Penagos Casas Collection from the Academy of History of Cauca was led by Zamira Díaz, the current president of the Academy of History of Cauca, who accompanied this act with heartfelt words emphasizing the value and importance of the donation as a recognition of Dr. Edgar Penagos Casas's legacy at the University and in the Academy. Dr. Penagos was a Medical Doctor and Surgeon from the National University of Colombia, served as the University's rector on two occasions, taught Legal Medicine in the Faculty of Law, headed the Department of Surgery, and served as director of the San José University Hospital. Additionally, he was a co-founder of the Faculty of Natural, Exact, and Education Sciences.
It is noteworthy that Edgar Penagos Casas served as the University of Cauca's rector in 1983, the year of the Popayán earthquake, becoming a key figure in the recovery of the Alma Mater's facilities affected by the natural disaster. He also served as President of the Academy of History of Cauca. According to Zamira Díaz, Dr. Penagos was an unequivocal ally of Cauca's historical archive.
For this reason, historian Zamira Díaz requested naming the delivered archive as the Edgar Penagos Casas Collection of the Academy of History of Cauca.
During this symbolic ceremony, there were also contributions from the guests, highlighting the words of Luis Eduardo Penagos, expressing gratitude for the tribute and recognition of his late father, Edgar Penagos Casas.
Finally, the donation was received by the Director of the Division of Media Management and Bibliographic Resources of the University, through Resolution 1136 of 2019, and the availability of this significant donation in El Carmen Library was announced. It is worth noting the appreciation expressed by the former library director, Amparo Prado Paredes, towards Professor Zamira Díaz for her commendable work.
