In addition to acquiring knowledge and skills to teach high-quality mathematics, teachers in these contexts also must develop a specific form of \u201csociopolitical consciousness\u201d or dispositions to recognize and understand the different forms of inequity that shape the students\u2019 mathematical experiences. The development of such dispositions is critical for teachers to act upon existing barriers to mathematics learning that students from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds consistently encounter in school.
